Glass: Julep Cup or Old Fashioned
Equipment: Mortar, Muddler
Ingredients
- 16 – 20 fresh mint leaves
- ½ oz simple syrup
- 2 oz bourbon
- Crushed ice
- Mint sprig
- Angostura bitters (optional)
Directions
- In a mortar or metal bowl lightly muddle the mint leaves with the simple syrup.
- Place mint mixture into julep cup or rocks glass
- Add the bourbon and pack the glasses tightly with crushed ice ¾ high.
- Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside.
- Top with more crushed ice to form an ice dome, and garnish with a mint sprig and a few drops of bitters (optional).
Barkeep Notes
Firmly slap the mint sprig on the back of your hand before garnishing to release the oils to make the mint more aromatic.
Moscow mule glasses also work well if Juleps are not available.
Traditional cocktail of the Kentucky Derby.
